Puffy eyes can be caused by many factors from which are lack of sleep, crying, drinking, allergies and swimming. Just as there are a number of things that can cause puffy eyes, there are a number of remedies that can be found without going under the knife.
Reduce swelling directly. Eye puffiness is a type of fluid build-up (edema) in the tissues around your eyes, called the orbits. Therefore, the steps taken to reduce puffiness are similar to those taken to reduce any kind of swelling. The following are “quick fixes” to temporarily encourage fluid to drain away from under your eyes.
- Place cold soaked milk cotton balls/pads on eyes for 15 minutes.
- Place cold cucumber slices on your eyes. It is the cold temperature that is helping rather than the product itself. The aroma, however, can be soothing and relaxing. Slice them into 1/8″ discs and let them float in cool tap water for a few minutes. Shake them off well before applying to your eyes..
- Tea is a great way to remove puffiness as well. Make sure two tea bags are thoroughly wetted with cold water and then place them on your eyes for about 10 minutes. You can press from the inner to the outer corner of the eye if you choose. Although tea with caffeine causes the blood vessels to constrict thereby reducing the swelling you can use any type of tea as teas are full of antioxidants.
- Rinse your face in cool water and pat dry.
A cold compress near the eye can act as a short-term remedy as cold temperature constricts blood vessels, preventing the flow of fluid into tissues and diminishing puffiness in the process.
Drink more water. Puffy eyes, as well as any puffiness or bloating of the body, can be a result of water retention. When the body feels like it is not getting enough water, it will store it up. This results in the puffy appearance around the eyes and other places. Drinking more water and herbal teas will help keep the kidneys regular. If the kidneys are working properly, then your skin will be able to detoxify itself naturally. This means two great things for you: no more puffy eyes and skin that glows! It is also a good idea to limit caffeine intake also because they aid in water retention.
Head position when you sleep. One of the puffy eyes remedies is to raise your head slightly with an extra pillow when you sleep. This can help to reduce the fluid retention under and around your eyes. Make sure you get enough rest, as this can add to the fluid retention and weaken the skin around your eyes.
Eye massage. One of the suggested ways to help drain the fluid is to massage around the eye area. Always ensure that you start with a clean face. Massage the cream or oil around the eye area using your fingertips and using enough to allow your fingers to glide easily on your face. Use only a very light textured oil or cream as massage medium to prevent stretching or stressing this fragile area of skin.
If your puffy eyes don’t get better with these remedies, you may be suffering from a severe allergic reaction, or some other condition that requires medical attention.
