The Lasik eye surgery procedure stands for Laser Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis this is a corrective surgery to restore unassisted vision both in case of myopia or hyperopia. Once Lasik has been performed on the patient it is expected the patient will have vision without the help of glasses. This procedure is performed by eye surgeons with advanced laser guided machines which reshape the cornea so as to ensure that the focal point is on the retina. The glasses are required when a patient is not able to see distant objects, which means the focal point is not on the retina. This procedure reshapes the retina so that focal point is on the retina.
The procedure is performed in eye surgery clinics and it uses the Excimer laser which cuts thin flaps from the cornea to alter its shape. The procedure is certainly a development in correcting vision problems. The biggest advantage of this surgery is that once the cornea has been reshaped the requirement to wear glasses for correction of vision will not be needed any time thereafter. This is the single most important advantage of this procedure and there is no other advantage of this procedure and which is quite likely. The procedure was development over radial keratectomy. The requirement to wear contact lenses is also done away with since the corneal curvature is rectified so to ensure unassisted normal vision.
The disadvantages of the procedure are many and often it is debated as to whether this process can be at all called safe to be performed. Just like any surgical procedure this laser eye surgery is also with its deficiencies. The deficiency is not at the procedure level but mostly in damages caused to rectify a deficiency. The myopic eye sight can be because of retina being away from the focal point of the cornea yet while in Lasik Eye surgery the cornea is reshaped using Excimer Laser to ensure the focal point is on the retina.
This reshaping of the cornea is the main reason of the disadvantages of the Lasik eye surgery. Since flaps are cut on the cornea the chances of other sight deficiencies arise as pupil contracts or expand. The Lasik has been said to induce deficiencies like in sight like ghosting and starbursts and halos and also double vision. The primary reason for this is that that since the procedure works from the centre of the cornea to the side and in night when pupils expands to let in more light there is chance of light passing through the edge causing vision aberrations. This is one of the main disadvantages of the Lasik eye surgery.
There are other post operative complications in laser eye surgery and the most common of the postoperative complication is incidence of dry eyes. Though there is treatment for the complication yet in some cases this can be very severe in nature. The other complications can be vitamin D deficiency and overcorrection or under correction thus undoing the very benefit of the surgery.
